Highland Terrace Neighborhood

 History

Highland Terrace Neighborhood was originally designed and constructed under the supervision of a contractor named John Deeter beginning in 1958.  The Grand Opening Event included a celebrity appearance by Danny Thomas, we are told. 

It was, and still is, primarily a good family neighborhood!  People enjoy walking, front and backyard sports, easy bus stop service, and a small town atmosphere!  The Standard School District provides the children with a solid public school education;  while several churches and private schools or day care centers are also in the neighborhood, or easy access. 

Local shopping on Chester Avenue, China Grade Loop, and Norris Road are walking and biking distance, including grocery, hardware stores, car shops, fast food, coffee shop dining, and evening entertainment locations.

The Highland Terrace Neighborhood still has some of the original or long-term residents and homeowners.  Three of those residents, Beverly Richards, Suzanne Lange, and Jan Gary decided to get together one day and discuss the possibility of forming an encouragement cooperative.  Out of that discussion came plans to offer a few meaningful Neighborhood Events and encourage others to join in the fun!  We hope you will join one of our events, get to know your neighbors, and spread the help and encouragement!

Highland Terrace Neighborhood Yard Sale Events

One of our planning sessions, we discussed the possibility of doing a Neighborhood Yard Sale Event.  A date was set (May 19) for one section of our Neighborhood to receive information fliers, and personal invitations.  Jan Gary and Suzanne Lange agreed to facilitate the event, making the fliers, distributing, advertising the sale, and participating.  One other household decided to participate, before the day arrived.  The cool thing is, that day, several other streets also had yard sales planned and prepared by their owners; so it truly became a larger Neighborhood event than expected!  Just driving by on Manor, I could see at least four or five other streets with yard sales!

Then, June 9th, Beverly, Steven, Jonathan, Adriene, Jenny, and Michelle Richards spearheaded another opportunity for a Neighborhood Yard Sale.  We had six households participate.  Each household received three Red, White, and Blue balloons to mark their participation.  Even some of the new neighbors participated, having a great opportunity to meet and greet others in the Neighborhood!

We hope other blocks will continue to cooperate, plan Yard Sale Events together and get the word out about Highland Terrace Neighborhood, a great place to live!  If you would be interested in hosting a Highland Terrace Neighborhood Yard Sale Event on your block, let us know!  We will help you get started on the planning when you are ready!  Call Beverly 661.304.6778

The next Highland Terrace Calendar Event is planned for October (exact date TBA), a Neighborhood Cleanup Day!  This will be the same day that the Bi-Annual Waste Management Cleanup Day will be coming to North HIgh School.  They will take our large items and not charge us for the disposal. 

If you need help to remove unwanted large item trash or recycle items, or you need labor to clean out weeds, move landscaping materials, or  have general group clean up needs, let us know.  We are planning to get as many HT-Neighbors to participate, as possible, in helping one another with the big jobs.  What seems like an insurmountable task for one family, may be very easily surmounted by a larger group.

NOR Recreation Department may be able to help you connect with Government help for swimming lessons fees, if you are currently receiving any other help from the Government!

Oildale Leadership Alliance (OLA) meets once per month, usually on the third Saturday, for a breakfast meeting.  Local and other encouraging speakers are invited to share their plans and activities in and for our Neighborhoods.  You are welcome to attend!  While not exclusively Christian, it was founded and operates as a forum for many Christian leaders and ministries or non-profits in the area.  Oildale Leadership Alliance is a Chapter of the Kern County Leadership Alliance.

Many other leadership cooperatives are at work in our area!
