Bowman Field Tree Removal in Our Neighborhood
The
Louisville Regional Airport Authority (LRAA) plans a large expansion of their
airspace around Bowman Field which will lead to removal or topping of hundreds
of trees in our neighborhood. Our best information at this time is
that some trees in Seneca Gardens will be included.
Even
though the bulk of the removals will occur outside of Seneca Gardens in Seneca
Park and along Drayton, Landor, and McCoy, this is why we should be concerned.
First, what happens around us affects us too. In particular, we have
worked with Louisville Metro Parks to preserve and improve Seneca Park, an
Olmsted designed park, which provides us a beautiful entrance. Second,
the LRAA has expanded their claim of airspace twice in a decade. Any
future expanded claim would intrude greatly into Seneca Gardens so we must be
involved now.
The
LRAA will hold a workshop this Monday, December 19, at the old Bowman terminal,
2815 Taylorsville Road, from 5:30-8:30pm in which they will be more specific
which properties will be affected.
The
1000 trees that have been planted and subsidized by Seneca Gardens in the last
23 years make Seneca Gardens a unique city. Essentially, you live
inside an arboretum, an arboretum you see every day as you walk or drive
through our city. But Seneca Park and the immediate neighborhoods around Seneca
Gardens are important to our experience, too. We should not stand by
without making our opinions known.
