Do you know what it means when the warning sirens sound?
The first Wednesday of each month at 1:00p.m. is the monthly
test of the outdoor warning sirens. At all other times, a steady wail means that some part of the metro area is experiencing, or about to experience, some type of emergency. Turn on your radio or television for complete information. When you hear this sound, do not call the Police unless you have an emergency; do not use your telephone to call other persons, as this action can overload the telephone circuits.
A tornado watch occurs when conditions are right for a tornado to develop in a specific area and time period. A tornado warning occurs when a tornado has been sighted. No sirens will be sounded for a tornado watch. Sirens will sound a steady tone for five minutes in a tornado warning alert. During a tornado warning, seek shelter immediately.
