The transportation departments of Portland and Vancouver have joined forces to improve traffic issues surrounding the Interstate Bridge. Columbia River Crossing (CRC) is a bridge, transit, and highway improvement project for I-5 between Portland and Vancouver. The project is studying two bridge options and two transit options in a process to identify the best solution for improving mobility and safety, and decreasing congestion in the five-mile project area. Final proposals are as follows:
1. Build a new bridge with 5 to 6 lanes in each direction. A lane in each direction designated for bus rapid transit.
2. Build a new bridge with 5 to 6 lanes in each direction. Light rail transit will be extended to Vancouver.
3. The existing bridge would be upgraded and re-striped to accommodate 4 lanes northbound traffic. A new bridge would be built to carry southbound traffic and bus rapid transit.
4. The existing bridge would be upgraded and re-striped to accommodate 4 lanes northbound traffic. A new bridge would be built to carry southbound traffic and light rail transit.
5. The Interstate Bridge would remain as it is today.
Columbia Crossing?’s hopes that a final design will be in place by October of this year and that construction will begin in the spring (2008).
Neighborhood discussion and involvement is encouraged! If you have thoughts and/or concerns about the project, you can find out more information at www.columbiarivercrossing.org or email feedback@columbiarivercrossing.org or phone 503.256.2726.
