On June 7, 2002 Gov. Pataki and Housing and Urban Development Secretary Mel Martinez announced approval of the Resident Grant program.
Because IPN is in Zone 2, its residents are eligible to receive funds. The program promises 30% of rent for two years up to $6,000, a one-time grant of $1,000 for households whose members were ongoing residents on September 11, 2001, and a one-time family grant of $750 for families that include children under 18 years old who plan to live in the community for at least a year. Applications are not yet available.
On the downtown development front, the Lower Manhattan Development Corporation (LMDC) has received six draft designs for the rebuilding of downtown New York. These and related issues were discussed at a 5,000-person town meeting ("Listening to the City") at the Jacob Javits Center, West 34th Street near 8th Avenue, on July 20. Six IPNTA members attended.
The designs went on public view July 22 at Federal Hall on Wall Street. There will be another public hearing in Lower Manhattan during the first week of August and continuing public comment will be welcomed until August 19th.
