SURVIVOR
INDIAN HILLS!
Sunday September 14th gave us some weather to remember! That afternoon the remnants of Hurricane Ike pushed all the way into central Ohio. For us, there was no rain to speak of, but there was wind the likes of which are rarely felt in our part of the country. Wind gusts of 75-85 MPH or more resulted in damage all across the area, and Indian Hills was no exception. Whole trees toppled over or snapped in half, and limbs and branches fell onto houses, power lines and everywhere else. It was quite a mess, and for an added attraction the electricity was off . . . for days! Suddenly, batteries, candles, ice, generators and gasoline were in short supply.
But despite the challenges, most people muddled through and there were countless good deeds and acts of kindness throughout Indian Hills. Typical questions from a neighbor: ?“Everybody OK at your place? Any damage to your house? Need help with anything??” It was certainly not an experience any of us would choose, but it was a shared experience, and knowing that we were all pretty much in the same boat somehow made it easier. As somebody said, ?“It was like camping out, but with a really nice tent!?” Here?’s hoping you survived the Great Windstorm of ?’08 in relatively good shape.

POOL IS CLOSED, BUT IT WAS A GREAT SUMMER
Labor Day marked the end of another wonderful summer at the Indian Hills pool. Memberships were solid & steady, and we do a pretty good job with walk-ups and guest fees. Our swim team combined with the Sycamore Hills team and this joint entity swam in several COSA League meets ?– big pools, lots of swimmers. It was fun, and we plan to do it again. Friday night cookouts at the pool continue to be a big hit, and our snack bar did a brisk business all season long. Thanks go to our Lifeguards and to our Pool Chairperson Tammie Dondero, who did a great job organizing all the pool activities ?– cookouts, movie nights, cornhole tournaments, musical entertainment, etc. Everybody had a great time all summer long!
(For those who receive the Smoke Signals by email, we?’ve attached a couple photos of pool fun.)

AN APPRECIATION
(Tim Murnane of Stoney Creek wrote this piece about one of his favorite people, and asked that it be put in the Smoke Signals.)
Gordon Hein of 6090 Sedgwick Road died recently. Gordon and Norma lived in this house since the day it was built. Gordon was an invariably cheerful man who left you with a warm feeling. He often said, ?“I don?’t care if someone offered me a million bucks, I?’d never move from this neighborhood. There?’s no other place that would have the great neighbors I?’ve been blessed with. Being with the people around here is worth more than a potload of money.?”
Gordon always made me feel the same way.
ENTRANCES SPRUCED UP
Hope you?’ve noticed the entrances on Linworth Rd. The Rocky Rill entrance underwent a complete re-landscaping in mid-August. The Sedgwick entrance received a thorough clean-up, and both Linworth entrances were edged and mulched. Leading the renovation effort is our new Entrances Chairperson, Lynn Moore of 6037 Tulip Hill. Lynn has already added some seasonal plants and decorations and is committed to keeping our entrances looking good. Thanks, Lynn! To give her a hand with the entrances, call her at 430-3854. And thanks to Sandy Hindall who continues her excellent work at the Olentangy entrance, and thanks to all the entrance homeowners for their help and cooperation.
ANNUAL HALLOWEEN PARTY WILL BE OCTOBER 24th
Our Halloween party is set for Friday, October 24th at the Common Grounds parking area. We?’ll have a bonfire, hotdogs, marshmallows, and lots of fun and games for boys and ghouls of all ages. Kids are encouraged to wear their costumes. This scary good time will begin at approximately 7:00 p.m. For more information, call Activities chairperson Kristin Zerkle at 505-0123.
