It seems the right of a dedicated community organization to perform it's job of protecting and preserving the quality of life of our neighbors is being challenged. It is important to understand that we--the leaders of the association, oe anyone else for that matter--are not being unreasonable, unfair or even overstepping our rights to complain about those who would ignore the law, exploit our community and act in ways that are counter to our mission. Should we expect those who are guilty of violating not only city ordinances but our own values, mores and goals to retaliate against us by making false claims or trying to smear us along with others who seem to also have an ax to grind? It would seem so, based on recent events that amounts to a personal attack. If one, especially a business which should know better, is violating codes, it has to accept responsibilty and become legal. End of argument; it's the law. Otherwise, when we--or any neighbor--has a complaint they are fair game. It would be great if everyone could be nicer about these things. And it would be great if enforcement was better managed and less likely to put people who should be working together at odds, instead. But frankly, overtures are often rebuffed and attitude is clearly antagonistic toward those making them in an effort to reach out early on....before trouble crops up.
So, if you've made a mistake and been caught and cited, don't blame the one organization that wants everyone to get along, bring improvement to the area, be successful and care about neighbors equally. We can be your best friend....or not. Because we are just as invested as you are and we are not going away or ignoring threats to our own property values, quality of life and enrichment of our spirit as residents of the greater Garden City area. We're elected to fight these battles and we take the job seriously.
