I have noticed children in the neighborhood riding their bikes on the left side of the road instead of on the right side-which is not safe-especially when the road is curvey and an oncoming car may not see the child until the last minute. I would encourage parents to teach their children the bicycle laws and encourage them to obey them. Here are some of the Indiana Bicycle laws.
1. Ride on the Right-Always ride with the traffic.
2. Obey all traffic laws-stop at stop signs and stop lights and obey one-way street signs.
3. Signal and look before turning
4. Ride in a predictable manner-ride
in a straight line.
5. Don't swerve between parked cars.
6. Use headlights and tailights at night-wear light colored clothing.
7. Yield to Pedestrians-pedestrians have the right of way.
8.A person propelling a bicycle may not:
a) ride other than upon the permanent and regular seat attached to the bicycle; or
b) carry any other person upon the bicycle who is not seated upon a firmly attached and regular seat on the bicycle.
9. A person upon a bicycle, a coaster, roller skates, or a toy vehicle may not attach the bicycle, coaster, roller skates or toy vehicle or the person to a street car or vehicle upon a roadway.
10. A person riding a bicycle upon a roadway may not ride more than two abreast except on paths or parts of roadways set aside for the exclusive use of bicycles
11. A person who rides a bicycle may not carry a package, a bundle or an article that prevents the person from keeping both hands upon the handlebars.
12 A person may not ride a bicycle unless the bicycle is equipped with a bell or other device capable of giving a signal audible for a distance of a least one hundred feet. A bicycle may not be equipped with and a person may not sue upon a bicycle a siren or whistle.
13. A bicycle operated on a highway from 1/2 hour after sunset until 1/2 hour before sunrise must be equipped with the following:
a) a lamp on the front exhibiting
a white light visible from a distance of a least 500 feet to the front.
b) A lamp on the rear exhibiting a red light visible from a distance of 500 feet to the rear or a red reflector visible from a distance of 500 feet to the rear.
A bicycle must be equipped with a brake that will enable the person who operates the bicycle to make the braked wheels skid on dry, level, clean pavement.
