Community Center

Email to John McKay dated 9/28/04 proposing Community Center in area of Maple Street.

John,
There are many people here who believe that since we weren't flooded by Hurricane Camile we will be safe from surge in future storms. However, the slosh model on which the attached map is based indicates differently. The attached map based on the SLOSH model for surge predictions indicates the different risks of surge based on being hit by maximum winds of the different categories of hurricanes. The blue areas are expected to be inundated by a Cat 2 hurricane, the yellow by a Cat 3 hurricane, and the pink by a Cat 4. In the event of a Cat 2 hurricane anyone who doesn't evacuate will be cut off even with the new causeway. As you can see, many of our homes will be inundated. We need to act to protect our community from flooding to minimize disaster and obtain lower rates for flood insurance. We need urban landscaping to increase our hurricane resistance. We also need a community center for location of emergency supplies and a place to protect people who have to evacuate because of surge, and a place to start pulling our community together. The Fountainbleau Community Center will not serve our purpose.

Therefore, it is requested that a community center be built on the highest ground in the area which is indicated by the pinkish area around Maple Street. Also, to improve our flood insurance ratings we need to establish a body politic with the power to establish and enforce landscaping and flood control requirements.

Best Regards,
Al Pettigrew

Graveline Beach

The County should act to protect Graveline Beach at the mouth of Graveline Bayou and control its use. The land protects and multiples animals, fish, shrimp, and oysters for fishermen in and near the bayou. It offers our community a prime vista for recreation and healthful exercise. It is the only place in the Fontainebleau area to walk along a beach unobstructed by bulkheads and piers. Additionally, it is the only natural beach on the entire Miss. Gulf Coast.
