Jefferson Park: Historic Landmark Preservation District

Jefferson Park Historic Landmark Preservation Distric is an early twentieth-century neighborhood located approximately two miles north of downtown Oklahoma City. It encompasses twenty-six blocks. Sparrow Park and Goodholm Park form the area's centerpiece. The neighborhood is surrounded by other historic areas -- Paseo on the West; Edgemere Park on the North; Heritage Hills East and Heritage Hills on the South. The Eastern boundary is Interstate 235 better known by locals as the Broadway Extension.

Jefferson Park represents a neighborhood that includes a diverse choice of living accommodations. The oldest homes in the district were built circa 1905, with construction picking up pace after Oklahoma statehood in 1907. The construction boom between 1910 and 1912 provided a few additional buildings in the area. However, between 1914 and 1931, eighty percent of the properties were built. Less than five percent of the remaining contributing properties were built after 1931 and prior to 1940.

Robinson Avenue (formerly Lafayette) is the main thoroughfare through the district and was originally part of the Oklahoma City trolly route. The route originated in downtown Oklahoma Ciy two miles south of Jefferson Park. The median (the original location of trolly rails) is a tree-lined liner park. The location of the trolly influenced the construction of many of the duplexes, four and eight-plexes and apartment buildings which line Robinson Avenue and spread throughout the neighborhood. Although Robinson Avenue continued north, the street car line and boulevard ended at Northwest 27th Street.
