We moved to San Diego in Sept. 1957. Do you have memories about the school? I remember a coke machine that took nickels! Not that I had any. Once I stepped out the big double back doors and a hard ball smashed into my leg knocking me down. Seems the big boys were playing and that one went out of control. My little sister Glenda who is 3 years younger didn't want to go to school and would cry and run into my classroom thereby embarrassing me. We didn't have a phone or a tv so I made up a number and pretended. We buried two of our dogs down by the church. We had Rin Tin who was shot by someone we never found out who and Black Jack who my grandfather accidentally ran over. Did you ever hear of the Blairs or Wests? My grandfather was C.C. West--we called him Bigdaddy and we were the Blairs. Some where I have a class picture of my 3rd grade. I will try to find it and post it. Take care. |

I remember a student-operated store in the hall by the principal's office where yu could buy paper, pens, and candy. Remember when they permitted roller skating in the gym one day a week? I have so many memories of that tiny school. Mr. Abshire (bus driver and janitor) lived next door. My dad was on the school board and was instrumental in building the softball field behind the school. Remember the haunted Steven's mansion way behind the school?
I didnt miss even one day of school until i got the flu in Mrs.Stephenson's 5th grade. Mrs. Powell (4th grade) lived near my grandmother and talked about me in church. Remember when Mrs. Powell would gargle with Listerine and spit it out the window? LOL |

Good memories of a special place. I don't remember roller skating but I liked the way the classrooms wrapped around the gym. I was in a couple of talent shows and remember the big heavy burgundy curtains. It was supposed to be a trio but the other two girls decided not to go out at the last minute, so I did a solo of Red River Valley. Many years later my sister and I recorded several Christian albums through our church and sang at every service for over 30 years until she moved away to Oregon. We started singing at Calvary Baptist.
I didn't have such a good attendance record as you. We took my dad to Euless to a gravel plant where he worked and often stopped at my aunt's house for my mom to have coffee. I would try to distract her so we could just stay there and play all day. It worked sometimes.
I do remember the haunted house on the hill. Kids on my street were Leslie Cockerham, johnny and Peggy Franklin, Barbara Jean, Bobby and Steven Smith. If other people are following these posts, join in with your memories too. (I wrote a much longer post but accidentally erased it and I am too tired to redo. ;) ) |
