The meeting began at 6:00pm and nine people attended.
Following the Agenda the President, Mike Link, welcomed everyone and introduced Officer LaTunya Meredith. Officer Meredith thanked everyone for having her and let us know that she is now working at District Four in the CLO office and is working with the community and the Block Watches. She has been working on attending as many of the meetings in the District and getting to know the neighborhoods and residents. She mentioned that the KANDO group is very organized and it shows in the Crime Data. Officer Meredith also passed along the following information:
•There is a spike in burglaries in the area bordered by Teutonia to Sherman and Douglas to Villard. There was Crime Alert from the District regarding this that was passed out to the KANDO members.
•Officer Meredith passed out her cards and let the group know that she was available to them. She will keep with lines of communication open and will follow up on their concerns.
•There was a short discussion on landlords expressing frustration when coming into the District and not having the calls to their buildings available and having to go to Third District. Officer Meredith explained that it is true the Officers can’t copy the calls and give them the reports; she will take the time to look up the calls and discuss them with the owners.
•Her hours are 8-4:00pm with Saturday and Sunday off, although her days and hours are adjusted to accommodate the many meetings she has to attend.
Following the Agenda, Mike then introduced the guest speaker, Dawn Harris, Parking Enforcement Supervisor. Dawn thanked the group for having her and passed out the information on Parking Regulations. The following information was discussed and/or passed along:
•If there is a problem with vehicles parked on private property, without the property owner’s permission, they can be towed if there is a No Parking sign (note: the sign will have to have been in place for 24 hours). If you have this situation and call, you will need to be there and sign a waiver allowing them on your property.
•The number for Dispatch is #286-8350. Depending on the situation they will dispatch someone right away.
•Abandoned vehicles with no plates for longer than 24 hours, call and Parking Enforcement will process the vehicle for removal.
•A vehicle is eligible for towing if they have 2 citations.
•Parking Enforcement does not work with the Drivers License.
•Wisconsin is a two plate State; MPD enforces this law not Parking Enforcement.
•There was a short discussion on the KANDO landlords making periodic drive thru of their lots, especially prior to winter to make sure that there aren’t any abandoned vehicles. Dawn credited the KANDO landlords for this attention.
•Mike mentioned that he has found Parking Enforcement to be very helpful and that they respond immediately and that they always take care of the problem.
•It is illegal to park in an alley from 2:00am to 6:00am and there must be a 17’ clearance.
•There must be 4’ between a parked vehicle on a street and a driveway.
•A problem vehicle and concerns of alleys in the KANDO neighborhood were passed on and Dawn will have them addressed.
•It was noted that you can check the DPW (Night Parking) website to check for outstanding tickets.
Next on the Agenda was finalizing the Lighthouse Dinner. It was decided that money from the group will be donated and Liz will purchase the food. A number of the members also agreed to bring deserts.
The final item on the Agenda was Neighborhood Issues and the following items were addressed:
•The August meeting had a discussion on Sex Offender Rules and as promised, they were passed out at the meeting.
•Liz Hammer reported that she is contacting new landlords, when notified thru the City of Milwaukee’s website, and introducing KANDO and inviting the new property owners. There was a short discussion on the property owners she has contacted.
•Mike Link gave an update on the issues on Kaul Avenue, which were discussed at the August meeting with Captain O’Leary, and reported that many of these problems have been abated and things have calmed down.
•There was a short discussion on the Impact Statements that will be done for an Offender that has been dealing drugs in our neighborhood.
•There was a reminder of the annual Redemption Lutheran Church picnic that is scheduled for Saturday September 12th from 1:00 – 4:00pm.
•The next meeting is October 13, 2009 and they group would like Alderman Puente to be the guest speaker; Liz will try to set that up.
•Liz passed out an invitation to the Landlord Breakfast, which Havenwoods Economic Development along with KANDO is hosting for Thursday September 24, 2009 at Brynwood Country Club
