trees and fences

Cynthia - just wanted to let you know that NOT ALL RESIDENTS of Cattleya Court want the trees to come down. In fact I think three residents on Cattleya were in favor. I understand just how you feel as we will be losing the trees along Westport Road within the next few weeks.

The fence issue should be addressed by the Board as this has a visual impact on the entering Beachwood. The different styles, types and various set backs are a major concern.

I am curious if anyone is really paying attention to what is going on.

Just last week the contractor responsible for maintaining the entrances was trimming the bushes - now this week they are scheduled to be removed!

I know how you must feel looking at the various fence designs - every homeowner on Cattleya and Orchid Place was told ''when the road comes through I will be putting up a fence around the Westport Road section that will be not only decorative - but a sound barrier. Well - the developer put up his own fence (and it was improperly installed) and the developer is gone and each homeowner is responsible for their own fence. I know what you are feeling as I see the same thing about to happen once the trees are down and the fences start going up

Orchid Place Covenants

To those who may not be aware, Orchid Place has its own set of covenants and restrictions residents are subject to, in addition to the ordinances of Woodlawn Park. They are a matter of public record and can be found at

In those covenants it states that no fence may be over 5ft in height. It also states that ''failure of any owner to demand or insist upon observance of any of these restrictions, or to proceed for restraint of violations, shall not be deemed a waiver of the violation...'' The covenants were signed on August 4, 1993. This pre-dates the ''Beechwood Rd.'' Tree Project.

If a fence is in Orchid Place and is over 5ft tall, it is in violation of the Orchid Place Covenants. Plain and simple. The Beechwood Road Tree Project has nothing to do with it, nor does the color. A violation is a violation is a violation. Enforce it. Unless there is some reason for the Code Enforcement Board not enforcing it. Is there some reason?

So what's the plan?

So after all this discussion, I was wondering what the plan is for this area. It really looks terrible and I don't even live on this road. I drive down it every day to/from work and it is just an awful eyesore with all of the different sizes and styles of fence. If I lived on this road, I would be incredibly upset. I hope there is a resolve to this issue that is appealing to everyone. Thanks.

Trees and Fences

I am blown away how rude some people are on here. (No wonder they want to remain anonymous!)

The truth of the matter is the entrance to Beechwood Road looks terrible. I have had many visitors this summer ask ''What is going on?'', ''What happened to the trees?'', and ''What is up with all the different fences?''. Even though they have different questions their comments are all the same, ''It looks terrible!'' I think the best solution for both sides would be to put up a uniformed fence and complete with some nice landscaping. Some of these messages people are just arguing to argue. There is no denying it looks terrible. I am sure Beechwood residents do not want to look at the back of the houses on the court, I am sure that the residents on the court do not want to look at the front of the houses on Beechwood, and visitors should not have to enter our neighborhood wondering what the mess is all about and why it is still there months later. As for the fence restrictions in Orchid Place it seems those are going to have to be addressed with the road construction that is going to be taking place on Westport road.

I hope everyone can find a peaceful solution to the matter that is attractive to all. This area is the first thing people see when entering our neighborhood on this street and when the trees were there they recieved many positive comments on how unique it was to have an entrance like that in the St. Matthews area.
