Dear Sirs and madams,
I would like to say thanks to the efforts made at 612 Zane last night by
Officer Terra Long and the hard working officers of the LMPD this is a good
start. The owner of the building needs to be made aware that this is the
third drug arrest in his building and we need to push for notification of
the nuisance ordinance.
There is a meeting of neighborhood watch on 5/25 at 7pm in St Louis
Bertrands, we need to push for action on All crime issues affecting north
Old Louisville and Limmerick, neighbors please take time to list specific
addresses and personal descriptions of hot spots on your block and email
them to me and i will forward information to police and to city officers or
better yet show up and voice your concerns in person. Members of the press
are welcome and invited.
At the meeting we of the Limmerick community are going to suggest that the
remaining $4000 in funds of the Limmerick association be donated to the 4th
Area for the purchase of 4 police equipped bicycles to be used in an
neighborhood police patrol, not one that resembles the for show horse
patrols but a viable crime fighting unit. We would like the city to have
these patrols running 24 hours a day from 65 to 7th and Hill to York
focusing on the on the well known hot spots within. What would be the cost
of a 12 man 24 hour patrol? My guess is 500,000 a year, maybe that cost
could be culled from the parks fund or the stalemated bridge fund.
Regaurdless of the cost this area cannot be made viable for businesses that
we all want, without a street police presence.
The redisticting of area police has hurt our community and all efforts
should be made to have recognizable police in our area. Beat cops have saved
many small urban communities in the US and should be implemented here and in
other areas of the city. I imagine that if the same activities we deal with
on a daily basis were to occur on Bardstown road or Brownsboro there would
be SWAT teams out to deal with it, we know its the economics but how are we
to build our economic base without dealing with the blatent crime problems
in our area?
We all recognize that this is not the fault of the patrolman they are often
as frustrated as we are with the situation. I remind all of you to remember
what i was recenly told by a patrolman that an incedent at 6th and Oak can
have an officer dispatched from as far away as Manslick road which is
absurd!
Oak street from the highway to 7th is a disaster, open container drinking
has increased to the point where the average person would not attempt to
trek the length of Oak Street as you would be accosted on every block day or
night.
We should consider banning by ordinance package liquor sales in Old
Louisville and Limmerick, that would greatly decrease criminal activity in
our area. What is the political process needed to reach that goal?
Our area has now lost another supermarket and that will no doubt increase
the blighted look and feel of the neighborhood all efforts should be made to
attract a large chain with deep pockets to the old Winn dixie location and
all drug traffic in the parking lots of the Dollar store and Rite Aid should
be addressed immediately.
With your help we can make this beutiful area into a viable area, not the
community under siege that it is now.
