'' Be Prepared!''
. I love living in the Kerns neighbor- hood. We have great neighborly spirit! Where I live people still stop on the sidewalk & talk to each other,pet dogs, admire gardens. That's why I was really startled when I learned that in the entire neighborhood there are only three of us ( a couple & me) who have completed the Fire Bureau's Neighborhood Emergency Team training.
About a year ago I joined a large group of people from most areas of the City at the Portland Fire Bureau to learn how to work together with the fire department and our neighbors in the event of ( any kind of) emergency.In eight weeks we learned a lot more than I had ever imagined possible.
Home preparedness, utility control,some search &rescue skills,, team work... were some of the topics we covered. I am not Wonder Woman. Neither was anyone else at the trainings. Some of the exercises weren't easy. We all got through, though; and we felt pretty darn good about our Team when it was over!
As an older woman with some health challenges, when I received my NET i.d.on the last day of the classes, I felt like I had really accomplished something! I felt like I was much better able to take care of myself-- and to help my neighbors
Plus,I do have to admit that my orange NET hard hat has become quite a conver- sation piece at parties.
Please think seriously about joining us.You are definitely needed!
