INDIANAPOLIS -- A large portion of Glendale Mall closed Thursday so developers could prepare for changes that include the introduction of a Target store.
Many of the mall's businesses were evicted with instructions to leave in February. Still, some would-be shoppers arrived at the mall Thursday and were surprised to see most of it locked.
"I was going to run here and do my shopping in five minutes. Now I'm heading to Lafayette Square," shopper Tonie James told 6News' Cheryl Jackson.
Still open are a Macy's department store, Staples, an Indianapolis-Marion County Public Library branch and a movie theater.
Other stores are expected to join Target in the redeveloped portion of the mall, but the center's owner, Kite Realty, hasn't offered details. Kite Realty didn't answer 6News' calls for comment Thursday.
The redevelopment of the mall come after years of declining business there.
"I think it's very sad because this area really needs Glendale Mall. It's kind of an anchor," said shopper Sandy Clark.
Shoppers said they are hopeful the Target store will help revitalize the area.
"I understand that the shops tried to make it and they couldn't. Therefore, they looked for a retailer to come in, and I think Target would be great for the area," said shopper Sue Caufield.
