Supermarket and housing on Flower between 8th & 9th Streets?

Jun 07, 2001

The City Council passed a motion authorizing the Community Redevelopment Agency of the City of Los Angeles (CRA) to enter into an Exclusive Negotiation Agreement with Shuwa Investment Corp for development of a full-service supermarket and adaptive re-use of the Historic Parkinson Building. The proposed development is located on the Shuwa property bounded by 8th, 9th and Flower Streets, within the Central Business District Redevelopment Project Area.

The supermarket would be located on Flower and 9th Streets. The Parkinson Building is located on Flower and 8th Streets.

At the moment, the likely supermarket tenant is a 60,000 square foot Ralphs. Completion would occur within the next two years.

The adaptive re-use of the Parkinson Building would include approximately 40 units of housing with at least 20% of the total units set-aside as affordable housing. The CRA was instructed to review the possibility of developing additional senior housing near the Historic Parkinson Building within the Central Business District Redevelopment Project Area.

The CRA was further instructed to report back to City Council within 180 days on the status of the agreement with Shuwa.
