Graduation season is a special time for many families in our community. As a mother of six graduates, I know the mixed feelings families feel at graduation: pride, excitement, sadness for all the years that in retrospect passed so quickly and a little trepidation as our students move onto the next challenge in their lives.
My Congressional office has a special relationship with a number of our local graduates each year. They are facing a special challenge because they are the proud recipients of a nomination to one of our service academies: The Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, Military Academy at West Point, naval Academy at Annapolis, Coast Guard Academy in New London and Merchant Marine Academy in Kingsport. They will receive a first class, tuition paid four year education.
Any student seeking an appointment to one of our country?’s five service academies may tact my office for an application. Because I believe the best students deserve the highest consideration, I have removed all outside influence and established a local ?“academy board?” composed of service academy alumni and military personnel to recommend which outstanding seniors receive a nomination. Each service academy then makes the final decision as to which students receive appointments.
To help students get a true sense of what it is like to attend an academy, I host an ?“Academy Night?” seminar each fall. This is an excellent opportunity for interested seniors and their parents to talk directly with representatives of each of the academies.
This year I had the privilege of nominating eight outstanding high school seniors who received the recognition and honor of a academy appointment. I applaud these students for their outstanding achievements and their desire to serve our country.
