I am curious to know where you got your figures and how reliable they are. Particuarly the one about 40% of all fatal dog attacks in the US being pit bulls. I've been researching this topic for a while and numbers like that are just thrown out all over the place. Its made me quite skeptical that the pit bull breed actually is doing more damage than other "bully breeds" such as rottweilers, german shepards, dobermans etc. All of these breeds were also at one time banned because they were "so much more dangerous than the rest of the dogs." Until I see some solid evidence that pit bulls do account for "40% of all fatal dog attacks" I am going to say, "quit discriminating against pit bulls!"
