Heart Surgery, by Debi Walter
The kitchen is the heart of the home, we’ve heard told, and it couldn’t be truer in our house. No matter the number of people who visit or the chaos taking place, everyone always gathers there. I love to cook, and I love having family and friends over with whom to share our life.
This motivated me to enter a contest this past summer on WLOQ. They simply asked all entrants to write why they wanted to “Jazz Up Your Kitchen”. I took some time to ponder this question, then wrote a quick poem, ala Dr. Seuss style, and pressed the “Enter” button on the screen. I had no idea how this would alter the next few months of my life.
Yes, I won! I was shocked, and realized I had to tell my husband, who was already quite busy with projects at work requiring most of his attention. So, I called to apologize! When he asked, “For what?” I told him my good news! He took it well, but said I would have to oversee the project, and of course, I obliged!
So, here we are in our 5th week of renovations, and it feels like we’re undergoing heart surgery. Everything has changed. I remember the night before our old kitchen was to be torn out, the strange sense of sentiment over all the family gatherings and memories we had made in this room. I was certain I would love the new look, but there were, as yet, no memories attached to it.
Imagine my sadness when my two-year old granddaughter came over with her parents to see our gutted kitchen, and she broke into tears. I cried at her unexpected outburst. However, a few days later when they returned to pick up our old range that was stored in the garage next to our old cabinets, Norah joyfully exclaimed, “Mommy, I found it – it’s Nana’s kitchen! She’s going to be so happy!”
Change is always hard. Heart surgery is painful, but the newness of life that follows is worth it. So too, the heart of our home is undergoing surgery, and there have been many tear-filled moments, but I am anticipating the newness of life and memories yet to be made in this special place – our heart, our home! We look forward to welcoming you all into our new kitchen as we provide an Open House for our annual Light Up Lake Bosse event on Dec. 23rd. A first of many memories we will cherish!

As my tenure as the Association’s president comes to a close at the end of this month, I can’t help but reflect on how quickly these past 2 years have flown by. It has really been a pleasure working with such a great Board and for such a great Association.
I think we’ve accomplished much, and I’ve always believed that much can be accomplished if it doesn’t matter who gets the credit.
Thanks to every Board member who worked so hard for so long, and I have every confidence that you will continue to do so. Everyone worked very well together and when the situation called for it, we were able to agree to disagree without being disagreeable.
Thanks to Debi Walter, who does a great job, year after year with our Newsletter, and volunteers to lead so many of our festivities.
A special thanks goes to Ethan McCain for the tireless work he did with the new wall. It couldn’t have been done without him. Thanks to our entire community, who came together when it really mattered, and voted to allow Ethan and the rest of the Board do their work. It truly is a tribute to all of you.
I’m looking forward to even greater things in the future.

The Architectural Review Board has been working hard to beautify and help protect the value of our neighborhood. I’m sure that you have noticed some of the things that have been fixed at the front entranceway. We now have a repaired and improved marquee, we have straightened out the blocks that line the planters and we have fixed the lights in the center median. We had some flowers planted near the marquee but some one stole them. In January of next year we will continue to improve the neighborhood and fix the things that need to be fixed and maybe even add some more nice things that will beautify the neighborhood.
The back entrance planters will be addressed as well. Unfortunately we do not have electrical power or any irrigation to sustain plants so we may just have to wait to add lighting and plants until further notice. Maybe we’ll try after we pay off the wall. After the wall was built we tried installing drought resistant African Iris plants but as you see they have almost all died. What we may do is pull all the existing plants out completely then purchase landscape blocks in uniform with the front entranceway and design the planters in the same fashion, then just mulch the area so at least it won’t look as bad as it currently does.
We are still observing some properties in disarray too. Please keep your grass mowed and keep bringing in those garbage cans and recycle bins and placing them in the required storage area as mentioned in the Covenants and Restrictions by which all properties in our subdivision are bound. Also please clean up any trash, rubbish, old wood fencing and roofing shingles or tiles lying around on your property. You must have a clean and neat property seen from the road. If you notice that your neighbor needs help, give them a hand, it’s the neighborly thing to do. If they need further reminders then please let the ARB know, and we’ll be glad to address any observations you may have.
The Winter season is coming up and we’ll be awarding the “Yard of the Season” sign and $20 Home Depot gift card out to whomever has to best Christmas light display. So let’s get busy this weekend and win that award!

Vintage Lake Bosse Sun
This month marks 10 years ago when the first issue of The Lake Bosse Sun began. At the annual homeowner’s association meeting in November, 1999, I offered to begin providing a monthly newsletter to aid the Board in communicating more effectively to the neighbors. What began as a spontaneous idea has grown into a bimonthly publication with other homeowners contributing regularly. We have had 10 different boards, yet the communication has remained consistent because of a regular outlet such as this.
Thank you for allowing me to serve you in this way! During 2010 we will take a nostalgic look back at what was happening in our lives then by adding a Vintage Lake Bosse Sun column. I hope you’ll enjoy looking back at all that has changed and how much has been accomplished in our community in one decade! From the staff of The Lake Bosse Sun (that would be me!), Merry Christmas from our home to yours!.

Checking It Twice
Read the label for age-range. Should this go without saying? It doesn't. Nearly every toy or game provides the recommended age range on the box. So, unless you know for certain that the child is developmentally ready for it, just stick with the guidelines. John Drengenberg from UL adds, “Even if a child is developmentally ready, they all have a tendency to put thing in their mouths. Small parts and pieces make it ill-advised to move too far beyond the suggested age range for a toy.”
Look for UL Mark on electronic toys. As long as you're reading the label for age, check for the UL Mark to indicate that an electronic toy has been thoroughly safety tested. The UL-in-a-circle-Mark will be prominent on the box of any toy that has been UL certified.
Think large and sturdy. For children under age three, all pieces of a toy should be larger than the child's mouth (or too big to fit through a toilet paper roll) to avoid risk of choking. According to the AAP guidelines on toy safety, make sure that plastic toys are sturdy and stuffed toys are well-made and machine washable so that pieces cannot be easily pulled off and ingested.
Check for product recalls. 99.9 percent of the time this tip applies to the toys already in your home and not ones you would be purchasing new, But, if a massive toy infusion like a birthday or holiday is fast approaching, it is worth checking out the big list of toy recalls before you buy a toy and your kid falls in love with it.
Ask the parents. Finally, before buying doll clothes for a child with no doll or noisy toys for any child, ask the parents what is appropriate and welcome into the home.
