Hello,
The Carmel Police Department is in the beginning stages of planning bike safety events for Carmel neighborhoods. This is a new venture for us, but we feel it is a much needed one. Children of all ages are injured from bike accidents every day. We believe giving them the proper techniques for bike safety can reduce those injuries and accidents. Please let us know if your neighborhood would be interested in this type of event. We will look at the interest level to start planning accordingly. Once the planning stage is completed and dates are determined, you will be made aware of those dates and times.
Here is a brief description of the event. The first stage would consist of a “parent training night” on the evening before the event. This would take place in a school parking lot where we will instruct parents on bike laws, finding and fitting your child with a bike helmet, proper use of hand signals, techniques of stopping their bike, crossing streets and intersections and even exiting their own driveway. The second stage would consist of closing down an area of your neighborhood. Parents, with instructor’s close by, would teach their children all the techniques they learned the evening before. We believe that parents being with their child as they learn these skills will reinforce the importance of bike safety.
Again, please let us know if you would like to have an event like this in your neighborhood.
Thank you!
