Where, oh where, has my little dog gone?
Our crime watch area has experienced a rash of lost dogs and cats recently. Fortunately, many of those animals have been reunited with their owners. We are privileged as a neighborhood to have many families who readily take in and care for lost animals. This is an invaluable service to the families of the lost animals. However, there are several steps we can take as pet owners to increase the chances of reuniting lost animals with their owners.
The first step is registration. All animals must be registered with the city of Dallas. This requires proof of vaccination and a small fee. Information about the city registration process can be found at petdata.com. Also, our crime watch area has a pet registration process. Deborah West organizes our pet registry and helps neighbors when animals are lost or found. This process is as simple as filling out a form about your pet and mailing it back to LH1076, P O Box 38002, Dallas TX 75238-0002. An online form can be obtained at our neighborhood website at neighborhoodlink.com/dallas/lhcwa1076/. Pet Registry Coordinator can be reached at any time. See below for contact information.
The second step is to always have your pet wear identification. This means they must have a COLLAR and TAGS. Animals can be unpredictable and escape when you least expect it. Therefore, it is imperative to always keep a collar with identification tags on your pet. These tags should include the city registration tag, rabies vaccination tag and a name/phone number tag. Your pets will be returned to you much quicker with this information. In the event that they run away without their collar or somehow lose their collar, a microchip can also identify them. This microchip has an ID code that will identify your animal and is injected between their shoulder blades. Most veterinary clinics and shelters have the ability to read these chips and match the animals with owners. More information about the microchip can be found at spca.org under the ‘clinic’ menu. Your veterinarian can also answer questions about the microchip.
What do you do in the event that you lose your pet? First, make phone calls to your pet registry coordinator, local veterinarians, and lost pet hotlines. Lost animals can be reported at find-a-pet.org online or at their hotline number 214-827-4357. The city of Dallas has two lost pet hotlines at 214-670-8389 and 214-670-1965. Next, print and distribute flyers in the neighborhood, at grocery stores and gas stations. Also, place an ad in the paper and check the ads for found pets.
If you find a lost animal, then many of the steps you would take are the same as those previously stated. Call the pet registry coordinator, check with find-a-pet.org, take the animal to a vet to see if it has a microchip and distribute flyers to try to find the owners. Deborah West, pet registry coordinator, is available to help neighbors with lost or found pets and can answer questions about the process. If you are interested in volunteering to help with the pet registration program, then please contact her. Lets make sure our neighborhood is animal friendly and keep our pets safe!
