I am Deborah Ybarra the Founder of Lake Tara?’s Nature Habitat which is located in Jonesboro.
Lake Tara?’s Nature Habitat was created Dec 2004. During this last 4 years we the people In the community of Lake Tara have stood up and held our ground with Clayton County and a builder.
The Land in the center of the community was a 25 acre area which housed a 15-17 acre lake. This area was created as a public park in the 1950?’s and has always been open to the public. In June of 2004 the dam of lake Tara was breached and about 8-10 acres of water was let go to flow down stream. We people of lake Tara received an injunction from the court and stopped all further damage to the dam and we went into court and the land was awarded back to the community. Now we are in the process of restoring lake Tara into a public park for everyone to enjoy. Our plan is to restore the dam to be able to put back at least a 12-15 acre fishing lake with walking trails just for starters. We will be letting the local schools come and visit and study and nature and the wildlife which was also saved . Please visit our web site to see the wildlife still on the lake. www.laketara.org
We have the go ahead with the state of Georgia on repairing the dam and restoring the lake area. It is a beautiful area.
We in the community are tired of the county tearing all of our wooded area down for cluster homes and or strip malls that are abandoned within 5 years. We want peaceful areas that we can feel safe to go to and that we can enjoy and teach our children about nature preserve and wildlife. We want to see people on picnics, fishing, just enjoying family time together. Also working on free programs for the kids in a community type center. Like I said we are at the first stages of making this work and we need the communities help so please help!!!!!!
I want to offer my support with all issues in Clayton county that concerns our livelihood and safety for our children, ourselves and our neighbors. What affects you affects me even if your community is on the other side of Clayton county because if the county does not treat your area right how can we know they will treat any area right so we need to stand and stay together. We need places our children can go and grown and learn and not just hang out and destroy because of boredom or lack of money or just on the streets.
Like I said this is just a start to what we can do to help each other out and make something wonderful work through the citizens of Clayton county.
