The summer heat has finally caught up to us, and it’s a great reminder for why we need more trees! For those of you with young trees don’t forget their need for a little drink! If you have planted a tree in the last two years, please remember to soak it one to two times a week and keep mulch 1-2” deep to ensure its survival:
• Keep the mulch from touching the bark of the tree, though to minimize rot at the base of the trunk).
• Make sure the water gets to the tree – build a soil “moat” or “donut” about 2 feet away from and around the trunk (not on top of the roots).
• Never mound more than 2” of new soil on top of the roots of new or old trees! Let those roots breathe! Just use mulch on top.
• Older trees need water too. Add enough water to any rainfall to provide 2” of water every two weeks or so.
It’s time to start the planning for our Lakewood Heights Tree Planting Program scheduled again for this fall. The City of Dallas reforestation program provides FREE street trees (max. 2) to neighborhoods and residents who are willing to plant and take care of the trees so they grow in the years to come. The trees must be planted within five feet of your front curb. Please contact Lakewood Heights neighbor Carey Moseley at 214-841-0030 if you would like to participate. We’re beginning the list now so we’ll have the minimum requirement for delivery and planting in late November/ early December. The only cost to the homeowner is the planting labor itself, which is about $40 a tree, and helps ensure the tree gets planted properly.
Sign up forms to get your FREE TREES will be at the LHNA Welcome table at the upcoming National Night Out event, as well as at our October Pumpkins in the Park Picnic. Watch for more updates in the fall newsletter. Sign up now!
The LHNA Yard of the Month program is in full swing, or should I say FULL BLOOM! The Yard of the Month program started in April. Though we’ve just begun, this has been a fun and rewarding way of meeting the nicest and most talented people in our neighborhood. Street Representatives have been submitting their choices and the team has considered all.
The April winner was Deby & Jerry Merriman at 6237 Vickery Blvd. (below) They’ve been in the neighborhood about two years and say they really like the area. In April, their yard was in full bloom with beautiful pansies across the front of their home in a tranquil and inviting setting. A lovely yard and home!
May’s recognition went to Marian & Cleave Buchanan at 6159 Velasco (below). They have lived here for about 2 1/5 years, having moved from the Bluffview area. Their yard is a Certified Butterfly habitat, as distinguished by Texas Discovery Gardens at Fair Park. Their front garden is shared by neighbor Jenni Koskiewicz, blending both gardens into one. Marian, a Master Gardener since 1988, invites everyone to stop and visit. She loves to share her knowledge and show her beautiful garden to new friends and neighbors. Marian said she would love to see Lakewood Heights become a garden district with many homes showcasing their favorite flowers and landscape.
June’s winners were Mark & Evelyn Painter, son Phillip, & Evelyn’s sister at 6232 Vickery (page4), where they’ve lived since 1976. Evelyn & Mark teach at Stonewall Jackson Elementary. Their front yard is shaded and landscaped with an eye-catching variety or perennials with year-round color. Their beautiful yard is a result of family working together – a great example of the attraction of Lakewood Heights.
There have been so many pretty yards to choose from, all with their own personalities, choosing the Yard of the Month has been challenging! We consider them all winners!
