Summer 2003
Dear Friends:

Concert in the Park: Mark your calendars now for Los Cerritos Concert in the Park. Once again, thanks to our councilman Rob Webb?’s efforts and our neighborhoods past support we will be enjoying eight great evenings presented by the Long Beach Municipal Band. Beginning each Wednesday at 6:30 PM, starting June 25th, and continuing thru August 13 the concerts bring a great summer tradition to Los Cerritos. The Los Cerritos Improvement Association along with the Cerritos Park Neighborhood Association will sponsor a ninth concert on August 20th.

4th of July Parade: Parade assembly at Pine and Country Club, 10 AM. Don?’t miss this - bring your neighbors, kids, dogs, bikes, and wagons. Fun and games at Los Cerritos Park follows parade. Fire Dept. Hot Dogs, Watermelon, Face Painting and more! Arrive early. Coffee and Muffins at the Parade assembly corner sponsored by Hof?’s Hut and The Coffee Bean and Tea Leaf.

Long Beach Airport: As you may be aware the Long Beach Airport is now conducting a noise study to determine if more than 41 Commercial Flights will be allowed to use the facilities. The Los Cerritos Improvement Association continues to monitor this issue. We encourage concerned residents to become active and informed. LBHUSH2 is a group that has been advocating keeping airport impact at a minimum. You can visit their web site at www.LBHUSH2.org, call at (565) 595-8865, email address is LBHUSH2@earthlink.org and mailing address is LBHUSH2, P.O. Box 19061, Long Beach CA 90807. Another great source for information about what?’s happening at the airport is LBReport.com (Airport Watch). There is no doubt that if the airport is allowed to grow it will have an affect on our health, quality of life and property values.

710 Freeway Expansion Plans: The Gateway Cities Council of Governments, County of Los Angeles, the MTA, Caltrans and The Southern California Association of Government have undertaken the study towards expansion of the 710 Freeway. Not unlike the airport we are impacted by the 710 Freeway and must be attentive to its impact upon our community. Attend meetings if possible, log on to www.gatewaycog.org, or call (323) 960-4406 with questions or concerns.

Tree Restoration: The Los Cerritos Improvement Association Neighborhood Tree Restoration Committee, headed by resident Brian Hickman has completed the parkway planting of approximately 150 trees on Chestnut and Locust Avenues. If you haven?’t seen this major improvement you need to. It?’s our goal to restore approximately 440 trees in the community at a cost of almost $20,000 dollars. Although we have received a partial grant we will be responsible for 25% of this expense. Donations toward this effort are appreciated. Next Street to be planted is Cedar. Kudos to Brian for all his hard work!

Entry Island: Approval for signage, lighting and specimen tree installation is nearing completion for our entry island at San Antonio near LB Blvd. Thanks to all for your patience and support during this transition period, this project has been very complicated and slow in fruition. Once complete this Entry will add prestige, value and pride of residency to our community.

Del Mar Strip: Los Cerritos residents Henry Spredbury and Terry Smiley, are the responsible parties in converting Del Mar Avenue, from blight to beauty. If you haven?’t taken this ?¼ mile nature walk you?’ve missed out on one of Los Cerritos hidden treasures. Located west of Los Cerritos Park the Del Mar Strip runs north from the south end of Del Mar past Los Cerritos Elementary School. The heavily landscaped strip not only provides beauty but protection from the Blue Line and adjoining vacant land west of our community. Henry who spends countless hours, days, weeks and months in cultivating, watering and maintenance says due to physical limitations he will be forced to cut back on time spent at the strip. The LCIA is looking for volunteers and donations to continue the project. Call if you can help. Bravo to Henry for an unbelievable job! Ps. The LCIA plans to dedicate the strip as ?“The Spredbury Strip?” acknowledging Henry with a permanent marker somewhere along the trail.

Contact the Los Cerritos Improvement Association: If you have questions about involvement or any issues affecting our community contacts us. We appreciate your input, continuing support and donations. Have a great summer!
