Dear Neighborhood Leaders,
Spring is just around the corner. Time to plan your projects for the warmer weather. Projects help to build relationships within groups by working together as a team. For example, Brightside offers an opportunity for your group to build relationships and beautify your neighborhood with the Community Wide Cleanup. The Department of Neighborhoods also will be offering trainings that will provide networking opportunities with fellow neighborhood leaders.

Bylaws Tune-up
Every organization should periodically review its bylaws. When was the last time your neighborhood association or group looked at yours? If it?’s time for a tune-up, join attorneys from the Legal Aid Society?’s Community Development Program for an informative bylaws refresher course. Learn more about the role bylaws play in an organization, basic provisions that bylaws should contain and options you may want to consider. IPL 101
Active participation from all residents is essential to providing a clean and safe environment for all neighborhoods. Be a part of the solution. The Louisville Metro Inspections, Permits and Licenses department (IPL) will conduct concurrent sessions that will include exterior and interior violations, demolitions, enforcement and general issues. Because attendees will only be able to attend three of the sessions, bring a friend so your association can cover all topics presented. Attendees will also receive valuable handouts. This Saturday workshop runs from 8:30 a.m. ?– 1:30 p.m. (location to be determined) $10 registration fee. Contact: MetroCall 311 or 574-5000.

Neighborhood Link is a national program that provides free websites for not-for-profit associations. The Louisville Metro Department of Neighborhoods offers training assistance to neighborhoods so they can establish and maintain their free website. The workshop is free, but registration is required due to limited computer terminals. Contact: MetroCall at 311 or 574-5000.

NatureScape Grants Available
Brightside strives to find ways for all Louisville residents to become engaged in keeping our community clean and green - that is why we are so excited to present to you our newest program. NatureScape Grants are designed to help neighborhood groups and other non-profits keep the public spaces of the community looking its best by connecting your group with the needed resources to create the beautification project of your choosing. Brightside?’s Community-Wide Cleanup
As part of the ongoing community-wide anti-litter initiative we are asking you to help KEEP IT CLEAN! Join us for Brightside?’s next Community-wide Cleanup on Saturday, March 31. Take an active role in keeping our hometown clean because?…..?“Litter Makes Us All Look Bad!?” This spring cleanup is held in conjunction with the Commonwealth of Kentucky?’s Cleanup Week March 25-31. Students in K-12 are asked to help create a new logo for the event. Visit www.waste.ky.gov for details.

The Louisville Metro Health Department?’s Chronic Disease Prevention Team is offering free WELLNESS TRAININGS with topics of interest to worksites, as well as other groups or individuals.

?“Downtown Louisville: We?’ve Got Space 4U?”
New campaign spotlights downtown parking
A new campaign by Louisville Metro Government and the Parking Authority of River City will better inform the public about downtown parking, while giving people a financial incentive to pay their overdue parking tickets.


Now through Friday, March 30, people who pay their outstanding tickets will have their late fees waived. A $25 overdue ticket thus becomes $15 ?– a big savings, especially for people who owe multiple tickets.

?“We have plenty of parking downtown ?– 32,000 spaces,?” Louisville Mayor Jerry Abramson said. ?“We definitely have space for you.?”


The city?’s website, www.louisvilleky.gov, contains a map showing the location of downtown parking spots, including garages. The website also contains a searchable database for parking tickets. People may enter their license plate number and see if they owe fines, which may be paid online. People may also call 502-569-6222 to see if they have outstanding tickets.

Crime Prevention Strategies
We need your help. In the past, police officers responded to crimes after they had already been committed. Now we want your help in preventing crimes before they occur. We need everyone in our community to take an active role in learning how to stop a crime before it happens. One way you can take an active role in solving and preventing crime is by using the Metro Police?’s tip line, 574-LMPD.


Preventing Fraud

There are certain steps you can take to ensure you don?’t become a victim to fraud. Do not sign the back of your credit cards. Instead, put "PHOTO ID REQUIRED." When you are writing checks to pay on your credit card accounts, DO NOT put the complete account number on the "For" line. Instead, just put the last four numbers. The credit card company knows the rest of the number, and anyone who might be handling your check as it passes through all the check processing channels won't have access to it. Put your work phone on your checks instead of your home phone. If you have a PO Box, use that instead of your home address. If you do not have a PO Box, use your work address. Never have your SS! # printed on your checks. You can add it if it is necessary. But if you have it printed, anyone can get it. Place the contents of your wallet on a photocopy machine. Do both sides of each license, credit card, etc. You will know what you had in your wallet and all of the account numbers and phone numbers to call and cancel. Keep the photocopy in a safe place. You should also carry a photocopy of your passport when you travel either here or abroad. By following these tips you will make it a little more difficult for criminals to defraud you.

Louisville Coalition of Neighborhoods
LCON is a Louisville Metro-wide grassroots organization of neighborhoods established to promote and ensure the physical, social, cultural, environmental and economic development of Louisville Metro neighborhoods. LCON meets at Metro United Way (334 East Broadway) in the Community Room on the 2nd floor. The monthly meetings alternate between the 2nd Tuesdays and 2nd Thursdays of the month starting at 6 p.m. for dinner and the program begins at 6:30 p.m. Free. For more information go to www.lcon.org.

Second Annual Guided Walking Tour of Clifton
Join local historian Joanne Weeter and APH staff as we walk the streets of historic Clifton, exploring the transportation routes and historic architecture that make the area so special. Do you know the difference between Italianate, Queen Anne, and Classical Revival? When did shotgun housing appear, and who lived in a typical bungalow? This year we'll concentrate on residential architecture and the neighborhoods of Clifton. The tour will last for 1 ?½ to 2 hours. Registration is required. Belknap Neighborhood Association Partners with United Nations Environment Programme on the Billion Tree Campaign
The Belknap Neighborhood Association along with area neighbors and Belknap businesses is celebrating Kentucky Arbor Day on Saturday, April 7 by giving away 300 bare-root seedlings bought from the Kentucky Division of Forestry to anyone pledging to plant and nurse each tree to adulthood. These 12?” seedlings will grow into 70?’ to 120' canopy trees and include northern red oak, white oak, willow oak, yellow poplar, bald cypress, and American persimmon.

Warheim Park, 1832 Overlook Terrace, 40205, four blocks from Douglass Loop, is the site of the celebration and tree give-away from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., rain or shine. Follow the balloons from Douglass Loop, at the intersection of Bardstown Road and Douglass Boulevard. The festivities will include refreshments and entertainment, along with plenty of information, expert advice and consultation from a Kentucky Urban and Community forester, the city arborist from Public Works, and area naturalists associated with the Olmsted Parks Conservancy and the UK School of Agriculture Cooperative Extension. Deer Park Bike Rack Design Competition
Deer Park Neighborhood Association is sponsoring a competition to design and build a commemorative metal bike rack. The recipient will be the late Gil Morris owner of the Highlands Cycle. We are seeking a design that reflects our unique and diverse neighborhood. The bike rack will be installed at the parking lot of the Bardstown Road Presbyterian Church. Deadline for submitting a design plan is April 15th. Completion must be done by October 1st. The dedication will take place during the Week In the Highlands activities. Master Food Volunteer Program
The Master Food Volunteer Program is holding its third interactive training session starting March 8 through April 5th at the Girl Scout Building, 2115 Lexington Road from 9:00 a.m. to 3:45 p.m. The Program is looking for participants to attend the five, free consecutive training sessions and then payback by volunteering in the community. The professional speakers come from all over the state as well as locally and cover such topics as basic nutrition, international and organic foods, the food groups, nutrition and diabetes and food safety. The program has received excellent ratings from past participants and some of the volunteers are still working in the community as volunteers even though they have paid back their thirty hours over a six month period. Social Change Book Club
A Change the World Community Event

Here?’s a monthly opportunity for some challenging reading on topics related to social and community change. Each month we select a different book to read and get together to discuss, share our learning and talk about how it speaks to our ability to change the world. This club is open to anyone and has been meeting since July, 2006.

Regional Senior Games
Louisville, Kentucky ?• May 8-21, 2006

The Fifty and Over Games ?– formerly known as the Louisville Regional Senior Games ?– include events for participants of all skills and abilities, from basketball and a triathlon to bowling, billiards and ballroom dancing.

Join Mayor Abramson and other local business and civic leaders for this exciting competition. Winners qualify for the Kentucky Senior Games on Sept. 20-24, 2006, in Lexington.
