Always in the Same Way

By Sophia Lyon Fahs, 1951

For so the children come
And so they have been coming.

Always in the same way they come
Born of the seed of man and woman.

No angels hearld their beginnings.
No prophets predict their future courses.

No wisemen see a star to show
Where to find the babe that
Will save humankind.

Yet each night a child is born is a holy night.

Fathers and mothers,
Sitting beside their children's cribs
Feel the glory of a new life beginning.

They ask, "Where and how will
This new life end?
Will it ever end?

Each night a child is born is holy night:
A time for singing.
A time for wondering.
A time for worshiping.

Inspiring Stories You'll Enjoy

One of our favorite books by Sophia Lyon Fahs is "From Long Ago and Many Lands: Stories Told for Children Anew."

This is a retelling of about twenty old old stories some which you've heard many times, and others which you haven't heard before.

Fahs has a very idealistic purpose in mind, here. She wants to show us how we can draw inspiration from other cultures and other times. Of course, the kids won't be too bothered by this high-minded purpose. They'll just enjoy hearing or reading these stores.

One story you'll always remember is "The Mustard Seed Medicine." It begins with heart-breaking sadness, then restores your soul. It's one of those unhappy stories that becomes a happy one in spite of the tragedy.
