Mini park at M St and 48th

Jul 13, 2005

The intersection of M and 48th streets now hosts East Sacramento?’s newest park thanks to the McKinley Elvas Neighborhood Alliance and other community groups.
Formerly the site was a triangle island bordered on three sides by concrete with a lonely tree in the middle of a combination of mowed grass and weeds. Today, the location sports a whole new landscaped look more reflective of a small plaza.
A three-tiered fountain, that is lighted at night, is the mini-park?’s centerpiece. There are trees, a bench for pedestrians and cyclists to rest upon, a small grassy lawn, plantings and a drinking dispenser.
The idea of the ?“mini?” park belongs to Councilman Steve Cohn. The Pops in the Park Committee allocated funds for the project from monies raised during the annual music series. To supplement this funding, MENA contributed $1,000 to improve the sad condition of the triangle. Other neighborhood groups pitched in, including the East Sacramento Chamber of Commerce and the East Sacramento Improvement Association.
J.D. Stack, an East Sac resident and a board member of the Chamber, led the effort and, as a result, our neighborhood has a beautiful plaza.
