September 2002 Meeting Minutes

Sep 28, 2002

Minutes of the Madison Park Neighborhood
Association
September 9, 2002
Agenda of the Meeting

1. Community Service Police Officer Chris Lyons reviewed the current
crime statistics pertinent to the MP service area of Adam 2. He introduced one of the officers responsible for patrolling in MP.
Concerns were expressed with regard to the violent nature of two purse robberies where one elderly victim was injured and required hospital
treatment after being knocked down and dragged several yards before the assailant was able to wrest the purse from her. The officers said that
it could not be determined whether the victim had resisted the attack and held onto her purse or whether the speed, forcefulness and circumstances
of the attack had caused her injuries.

A male resident of MP, residing south of Tyvola, (i.e., in the patrol responsibility of Baker 2) asked whether similar crime statistics and
reports were available from Baker 2. Officer Lyons noted that Baker 2 did not have reports aligned with MP's boundaries. General
dissatisfaction was expressed. Officer Lyons assured the meeting that he had contacted the community service officer of Baker 2 and was
facilitating his attendance at the MP picnic, Sunday, September 29th. It was suggested that the MP Association follow up with Baker 2 directly to facilitate the consistent presence of Baker 2 officers and/or reports at MP Association meetings.

2. County Health Department Environmental Health Specialist, Mark O'Donoghue presented a comprehensive overview of the health and
environmental issues surrounding the West Nile virus - a mosquito-borne illness. A health issue especially serious to the elderly population and
to those with impaired immune systems, West Nile virus has been detected in the bird population of Mecklenburg County through post mortem
examinations of raptors, blue jays and crows. Noting that detection of the West Nile virus has ended the NC state health lab's post mortem
examinations of birds, Mark said that the next area for vigilance is mosquito control - especially control of the Asian Tiger Mosquito. Mark handed out brochures which review in detail the points and explanations that he covered in his presentation.

NOTE: If you have an Asian Tiger Mosquito problem (and they are very common people biters in MP), you or your neighbor have caused it. Asian Tiger Mosquitoes breed only in containers (e.g., bird baths, old tires, cans, Magnolia leaves, jars, pans, pet bowls, clogged or sagging gutters)and do not fly more than 400 to 500 feet.

3. Ted Peters, vice president of the MP Homeowners Association, reviewed tems concerning the MP picnic, Sunday, September 29th. Ted then
recognized Candace Armstrong who displayed one of the prizes to be awarded at the picnic. She urged all in attendance to thank and patronize the prize sponsors. Candace has received many nice Door Prizes and in recognition of their support we need to give them our support,
BlackHawk Hardware, Corners, Intro Contemporary Furniture, Hallmark, Park Terrace, Ernie's, Topper's. SouthPark Cycles (S.Blvd) Portofino (Selwyn Terraces) Mi Tierrita Colombian Restaurant (S. urged everyone to display them on September 11th.
