Bee Campus USA – Washington College, MD: Rare, Thriving Native Bee Nesting Site Documented on Campus

This month we have a guest post by Dominique Ellis Falcon at Bee Campus USA - Washington College, MD:

Campus photographer Pamela Cowart-Rickman, with the help of Sam Droege at USGS Bee Lab, recently discovered that ground-nesting bee hotspot on the Washington College campus, with five different species sharing the same nesting grounds! Four Andrena (mining bees), one Colletes (cellophane bees), and likely three cuckoo bees in the genera Nomada. Read more

People’s Garden Initiative Corner: Pollinator Habitat Case Studies + Pollinator Week in D.C.

Each quarter in 2024, we’re featuring a guest post in our eNewsletter from the USDA’s People’s Garden Initiative. Check out our last update: Meet the People’s Garden Initiative.

As we enter June, National Pollinator Month, this is a great time to work on managing your existing habitats or plan new habitats! Feeling stuck on where to start or want to hear about some of the wonderful things others have done? Check out the Stories of the People’s Gardens page to hear and see their inspirational work. The Xerces Society has partnered with several People’s Gardens across the country to help communities expand pollinator habitat in their spaces – read about stories from Sankofa’s Community Garden in New Orleans, The U School in Philadelphia, and Project Sweetie Pie in Minneapolis.

Did you know that the national USDA office in D.C. holds an annual event for Pollinator Week? If you are in D.C., be sure to come down to the D.C. headquarters’ People’s Garden on the National Mall for Pollinator Week celebrations with Xerces, USDA, and other partners! If you’re not in D.C., lookout for other Pollinator Week events near you, or lead one yourself!

USDA Pollinator Week Exhibits:

When: Friday June 21, 2024 from 10:00 to 2:00 pm EST

Location: On Jefferson St SW between 12th and 14th St SW, Washington DC, 20250. Exhibits will be set up on the lawn outside of the USDA Whitten Building and alongside the USDA Farmers Market and the USDA People’s Garden.

Free Promo Kit for Pollinator Week: June 17-22

As a benefit to our Bee City and Bee Campus affiliates, we provide "promo kits" to help with outreach. These digital kits includes items like printable handouts, ideas for events and activities, social media content, template op-eds, links for further reading, and more. Local Policy Survey: Your Expertise is Needed

The Center for Agriculture and Food Systems at Vermont Law & Graduate School (CAFS) is interested in speaking with Bee City USA and Bee Campus USA affiliates about their experiences navigating local policies (zoning codes, nuisance ordinances, etc.) that impact their ability to create pollinator habitat.

They are particularly interested in speaking with affiliates who have had success in changing their local policies or who face difficulty navigating their local policies.

This research will lead to the creation and distribution of public resources that will help urban food producers and policymakers navigate the laws and regulations that support or undermine urban agriculture and innovative production in cities and towns across the country.
