A National Cyber Security Alliance survey found that 86 percent of broadband users keep sensitive health, financial or personal information on their home computers. If you do any work from home, you may also be jeopardizing your company's sensitive data.

With an 'always-on' Internet connection like DSL or cable, your computer is 'always vulnerable.' Other than hackers, you are even more prone to viruses, malware and spyware that can quickly cripple your computer.

Quick tips on Net safety

- Use an antivirus program and download updates regularly (weekly, if not more frequently)
- Use a backup program that will safeguard data and allow you to recover from system crashes
- Use a firewall to stop intruders before they can log on
- Whether using peer-to-peer software, your email program or a Wi-Fi transmitter, only share files with people you know and trust.
- Use unique passwords and don't share them with anyone.
- Never send personal or sensitive information via email.
- Keep your operating system up-to-date for the latest security patches, especially if you are a Windows user. While there has not yet been a virus or malicious program that can murder a Mac, never say never!
