HUD Meeting

Nov 09, 2000

Maria Guzman, Legislative Aide to Assembly Member Richard N. Gottfried, recently arranged a meeting with a HUD representative to discuss the vast number of complaints she and the MPTA has received regarding MP recertification inconsistencies.
Several specific cases were presented along with the MP Handbook rules and the annually published Recertification Guidelines included with recertification packets. Examples included hair and make-up, equipment depreciation, deductions allowable without receipts, a 3% gross income deduction from medical expenses being incorrectly applied by the MP Recertification Department, as well as the fact that the rules are not being applied universally (one set of rules for everyone). At the end of the meeting he stated ?“you?’re right?”, directed to Ms. Guzman and the MPTA representative. He said that the guidelines and rules are published in ?“black and white?”, that they are not being followed and that he was going back to the HUD office to ?“see what he can do about it?”.
The MPTA thanks Maria for arranging this meeting and looks forward to a full review of the MP Recertification Department and its policies.
