Crime Alert
Residents Reminded to Lock Car Doors, Don’t Leave Vehicles Running Unattended and Always Secure Weapons Appropriately
Since November 1st, 2015, The New Castle County Police have taken a total of 91 stolen vehicle reports. Of those taken, 29 of them were left running, unsecured, and with the keys in the ignition. Many of the incidents involving running vehicles are crimes of opportunity for a passerby. We would like to remind all residents not to leave your running vehicle unattended or invest in an aftermarket remote starter that leaves your vehicle secured while it’s warming up. Don’t make it easy for a thief. An educational video can be seen on the NCCPD Facebook page or on YouTube at https://youtu.be/6EpdwMy1RHE.
The New Castle County Police continue to take significant reports of thefts from motor vehicles. In only a few incidents forced entry was used to enter the vehicle. The majority of the vehicles were unsecured and had items of value in plain view. Residents should remember to PARKSMART and always check and double check that they have locked their vehicle and removed valuables before leaving it for any extended period of time.
The New Castle County Police would also like to stress the securing of firearms in appropriate places. In the last month, 6 incidents were reported where firearms were stolen from a vehicle overnight. Firearms would best be secured in a residence and preferably in a safe secured within the residence. Securing them in the residence is essential in the event of a break-in as well as the additional benefit of keeping them away from untrained adults or children. Firearms are often one of the primary items taken during the burglaries of residences. The stolen firearms are often sold to other people and later used in violent crimes. Don’t fuel violence and secure firearms appropriately.
