Award honors activist's home, and her spirit

There was a time not long ago when drug dealers routinely threatened Donna Ellringer as she stood on the front porch of a dilapidated Victorian house that she and her husband, Maurice, were slowly renovating in one of the most notorious crime blocks of South Minneapolis.
When she wasn't challenging drug dealers, Ellringer could frequently be found at City Hall. There she fought for more police patrols and confronted city officials about a policy of demolishing old houses as a way of fighting blight and crime.
On Thursday, Ellringer wept while being honored at the city's 12th annual Heritage Preservation Awards ceremony.
