Bonhomie and an absence of controversy were hallmarks of the festivities that took place in the evening of May 13, 2003 at the Mar Vista Recreation Center when Councilwoman Cindy Miscikowski swore in the 13 members of the first MVCC Board of Directors, which had been elected on March 27. Master of Ceremonies, Jerry Gotlieb, oversaw the proceedings which were marked by smiles and much handclapping. The historic occasion was witnessed by Bill Cristopher, President of the Board of Neighborhood Commissioners.
Only one candidate for office chose to address the Board before the roll call votes were taken for each officer vacancy. Tom Ponton easily took the Chairmanship and Bill Scheding became 1st Vice Chair on besting his nearest rival by one vote. The remaining offices were filled by unanimously, 2nd Vice Chair by Evelyn Dravecky, Secretary by Amy Lawrence and Treasurer by Tony Navarro.
To the surprise of some, Jerry Gotlieb asked Cindy Miscikowski to also swear in the five newly elected Officers, although the required Brown Act notice had not been given. No-one broke the harmony of the evening by protesting and the Officers were duly sworn in.
The Board decided to reconvene on Wednesday, May 21st, at the Mar Vista Recreation Center. In accordance with the California Brown Act, Board meetings are open to the public.
The formal proceedings were followed by a reception.
