Bicycles on canyon roads

Posted in: Golden Gate Canyon
I am interested in community input on the issue of bicycles on canyon roads, particularly on Golden Gate Canyon Road. The County recently posted "share the road" signs at various spots in the canyon and this has provoked some discussion on the safety issues regarding road width and limited visibility due to tight canyon corners.

Safety for All

Bicyclists continue to be heavy users of our roads during spring through fall, so we do need to share the road with them. We also need some warning signs at several locations that remind drivers and bicyclists both to "Stay in Your Lane!" -- particularly on blind curves. We should consider asking the County to "corrugate" the road centerlines on dangerous curves, as has been done in Boulder Canyon, for example, to remind people that they are on the centerline or in the wrong lane. In any case, everyone needs to drive carefully, especially around the many blind curves in our canyons.

SIMPLE SOLUTION: When realizing there is not enough room for both the bike rider and your own vehicle, SLOW DOWN, until there is enough room to pass safely within your own lane, when you are not on a curve. You will still get to wherever you are going and so will they. Take time to enjoy your Canyon Road and be glad others enjoy it too.
