Mayfair Park Neighborhood Association

Nov 4, 2010, MPNA General Membership Meeting Notes

Call to order:  Kathleen Ruby at 7:07 PM.

?Ÿ        Agenda:

?Ÿ        Brian Weber , the new Language School Principal,  has been  warmly welcomed by neighborhood. The new non-profit charter school has 241 students, with a capacity of 450 students. They plan to stay 4-5 years at Whiteman, as they expand to a K-8 school. Recently spent $1.4 million on an addition, which added an elevator.  50 students travel by bus, though carpools are encouraged.  Cones are put out every morning for traffic control.    The schoolground gates are locked during the day until 6 PM because of Kaleidoscope Corner after school. They remain open after 6 PM daily and all day on weekends and school holidays.  The 2 immersion languages are Spanish and Mandarin.  This year, they teach K-2( kindergarden through 2nd grade); nxt year,  K-3.  There are  4 Chinese  and 4 Spanish classrooms.  Great beginning.  To observe, call the school to make an appointment.   Sandra Dias is the best school contact for this and any problems, such as a child being locked in the schoolground after hours.

?Ÿ        Marsha Johnson, our district’s city councilpersonl,  is still in office until July 19, 2011.  Her aides,  Lynn and Sarah, will remain as well. Marsha has loved serving her 7&1/2  years in office, but is ready for a change.

?Ÿ        The Lowry Redevelopment Agency (LRA) stays in place until last 2 parcels of Lowry land are sold.  Hanger 2 redevelopment is a bright spot. (see Jim Hartman  discussion)

?Ÿ        The future Buckley Annex Redevelopment is entirely within Denver boundaries.  The future Director will be Monty Force.  A Consultant has been chosen for writing a Request for Proposal to get  a developer on board.  The 600,000 SF Accounting Center deconstruction will be very expensive- there is still possibility of reuse, since to date no developer has come forward to develop the Buckley Annex as a new development.  The existing building has good electrical and IT systems, but  HVAC system and toilet configuration isn‘t suited to multiple tenants. Tim of DIA Partnership contacted Committee of American Manufacturers (CAMT) as possible tenant.  (CAMT has been given access to the NASA technology to apply for consumer use.)  Another tenant possibility is Golf hats but the manufacturer is in the process of changing management, so it is “wait and see”.

?Ÿ        The Master Plan for Westerly Creek will be complete in 3 weeks.  Aurora is declaring Yosemite to Beeler an  Urban Renewal Area.  This means the area will be added to Aurora’s comprehensive plan.  The area  behind Yosemite and  between 12th and 13th  Avenues has been selected for use as a $600,000 community garden, shelter, and soccer field.

?Ÿ        Angela Williams is our next Colorado State Representative, and extends her  thanks.  She knows it will not be an easy task ahead of her, and promises to focus on education, the economy, and balancing the budget.  If you have any State District 7 issues , you can email her office at  angela@angela4.com

?Ÿ        Jim Hartman, the Architect/Developer of Hangar 2, reported on its progress.  The hangar has been abandoned since Lowry  closed..  A large solar system, by Marterfer of LA and Portugal, has been installed, in accordance with historic detail.  The former hangar will be the hub for a dining district , and it is a key to the revitalization of the area.  Attached to the west side of the former hangar will be 350-850 square feet of “incubator shops”; with restaurants at the site’s perimeter.  Office space will be located on second floor above the shops.  The innermost hangar space will be converted to storage – there will be room to allow a truck to drive inside.  One tenant will be the solar firm, Marterfer.  Other areas will be  u-store-it.  A dog day Spa will be located at the south end. There will be neighborhood friendly awnings and signage.  The First phase structural work will be completed in March or April.  Restaurant stage pre-leasing is projected to occur in 2 years.  The development will incorporate a new entrance to the Wings Over the Rockies Museum,, featuring a pedestrian plaza below the raised airplane.  Existing Town Center - larger spaces. New Parking is planned for Hanger 2 @1 per 1000 SF.  See hanger2lowry.com   Coming on Nov. 12 - food trucks surprise event at 5:00 to5:30 PM.  See also Lowry link.com

?Ÿ        Police Sergeant Michael Wyatt of our  District 2 advises visiting the Denvergov.org  link for a reported crimes map.  Tony Birchert is our community policeman.  Remember, residential burglaries usually occur during day.

?Ÿ        Questions - someone from Board will follow up with roads, curbs and gutters repair question to Public Works via Marsha Johnson

?Ÿ

?Ÿ        A discussion occurred:  Are tickets the answer to speeders thru neighborhoods and parents parking in front of driveways of houses adjacent to school?
