Hello Ann,

Being diligent is the best advice. Unfortunately, because of the way homes are designed now days, there is not much room for "natural surveillance" . With this I mean, that we have large front doors & fine former dining rooms that face the front of properties. These windows rarely have an opportunity to be monitored by residents. Most home designs today have the family room in the back & kitchen. Think of the windows in your home, what do you actually see when you look out, and how much time do you spend looking out the windows? Another problem is air conditioning. People have their windows shut, and have the air running! Therefore, the chance of hearing breaking glass is slim to none. And of course, there's the back yard. When your back there, can you observe your neighbors back yard too? Can you see their sliding glass doors or windows? With so many people not home during the day, that is the best time for burglars to strike. Just leaving a car in the driveway could be a deterrent, instead of parking it in a closed garage. One of the best defenses would be a "audible & monitored alarm". An alarm that sounds when breached & the alarm company contacts the resident & police when the wrong code is given. Keeping shrubbery back to a minimum. If you have a neighbor or two that is home during the day, and they want to start their own mobile patrol, that would be good too. District Two provides training for that. The patrol is not intended to put anyone at risk, it's a tool that is used letting "would be burglars" in your area know that you are alert to the elements moving about your neighborhood. Burglars casing homes will not stick around in an area where they feel like they are being noticed. Looking out for one another is a very good thing & writing down information incase it is needed later. Last but not least, ALL residents should keep detailed information about their belongings. Model Numbers, Serial Numbers, Descriptions. Pictures should be taken of other valuables, such as jewelry, expensive pictures, silverware, china etc. Once those items are documented, keep the information in a safe place in case it is needed later for theft or damage purposes. I hope this helps.

2 Mayfair Break-Ins in 2 Days

July 26, 2006
There was a home invasion on Nottingham Park Sun. 7-23-06 between 11 a.m. and 2:45 p.m. when neighbors reported the front door open. An attempt to get in had been made at the back and when that failed they were brazen enough in broad daylight to go in through the front door.

Overnight 7-24 to 7-25-06 there was a truck broken into on Abbey Park and the owner''s tools were taken. I actually saw the neighbor reporting it to the Police when walking my 2 collies between 5:15-5:30 a.m. Tuesday morning.

The best suggestion I have to all is now we have to trigger our home alarm systems even in the daytime and always at night.

It appears Mayfair has been targeted. I
