McDaniel Civic Association Ballot Results – January 12, 2006

We had 40 neighbors in attendance. 34 neighbors cast ballots and 6 neighbors left the meeting early without submitting their ballot.

Proposal #1: 20 YES (APPROVED)
- Remove the small basketball court and replant the area with grass and trees.
- Resurface the large court area and install a basketball court at the far end.
- Install a small pavilion with picnic tables at the near end.
- Provide one or more NCC trash cans for the area.

Proposal #2: 2 YES (NOT APPROVED)
- Remove the small basketball court and replant the area with grass and trees.
- Resurface half of the large court area and replant the other half with grass and trees.
- Install a small pavilion with picnic tables on the hard surface area.
- Provide one or more NCC trash cans for the area.

Proposal #3: 12 YES (NOT APPROVED)
- Remove the small basketball court and large court area.
- Replant both court areas with grass and trees, returning the area to a natural state.

Additional items voted on:

26 YES/4 NO (APPROVED) - Improve the trail in the wooded area along the NCC sewer easement and then up toward Winley Road. Narrow some portions of the trail to 6 foot by replanting with trees and smaller plantings. Widen some portions of the trail to no more than 6 foot.

22 YES/4 NO (APPROVED) - Add a wood chip bed to the trail.

13 YES/11 NO (APPROVED) - Identify points of natural interest along the trail and install informational nature markers.

21 YES/6 NO (APPROVED) - Replant the clear cut area with trees and smaller plantings, returning the area to a natural state.

22 YES/7 NO (APPROVED) - Replace the NCC trash cans through out the park which were removed by New Castle County.

23 YES/4 NO (APPROVED) - Install a hard surface pathway from the Springer Middle School bridge up to the running track.

24 YES/4 NO (APPROVED) - Install a sidewalk along the park side of Shellpot Drive. The walk would run from the Springer Middle School bridge to Winley Road. The walk would continue south from Winley Road to where the housing begins. The walk would be designed to twist and turn and follow the natural shape of the land. Optional benches could be installed along the walkway.

4 YES (NOT APPROVED) - If you voted YES on proposal #3: Alternate plan to install the pavilion at Goodley park.

14 YES/9 NO (APPROVED) - Investigate the best location & installation of a composting pit. A 3 sided wood structure for leaves.

In some cases the votes cast do not equal the total number of ballots. In these cases, the voter did not cast a vote on the item and we only considered the YES/NO votes.

**********

We would like to thank everyone who helped us get this far in the process. We know we have more work to do, but we now have a strong foundation of consensus to build upon.

Please note the 1st three items on the ballot were three complete proposals for the main renovation concept. Neighbors were instructed to only vote for one of the proposals. The additional ballot items followed "a la carte" as possible additions to the adopted proposal.

We understand not all of these additional items may be possible at this time. Both the civic association and Bryan Holler would like to narrow down which of the additional items could be considered for the current project. This would allow Bryan to continue his official paper work with the Eagle Scout commission, with an idea of how he and his scout associates will contribute. It would also allow the civic association to draft the official request letter, spelling out our request with a clear understanding of the specifics.

For instance, Paul made it clear the last item regarding the composting pit, was not something the County is prepared to provide. However, there was some interest in the concept and was included at the request of a neighbor.

Another example is the issue of trash cans in the park. Paul indicated part of the reason the original trash cans were removed, was due to them being filled to obvious household trash. We feel there is great value in having the trash cans brought back and welcome a discussion regarding how we can help eliminate the wrong type of trash being placed in the cans.

The hard surface sidewalk from Springer Middle School bridge to Winley Road and beyond, is another idea included in the ballot by request. We understand this would be a large project by itself, but would love to discuss the possibly of this being a project in the future.

Please let us know if there are any questions regarding the voting and what was approved.

We look forward to the next phase in the process.

Best wishes:

Laurie Donovan - President
RJ Miles - VP
Debby Waxman - Secretary
