Street Wise
I see that this particular subject has hit a nerve. While I don't have a problem with an occasional game of street hockey, I do get a little annoyed at the herd of children, (and yes, sometimes mine are included in this group) that congregate at the corner of 103rd & Diamond and insist upon standing in the middle of the street, or doing acrobatics on their scooters/skateboards. I admonished my own son for doing this yesterday. Parenting is an incredibly difficult job, and they don't come with instruction manuals. (TV's have more instructions and warnings!)Hopefully this discussion will prompt other parents to at least explain to their kids that they should give the right away to vehicles in our neighborhood. Also, maybe it will prompt parents of older teenagers, who seem to delight in squeeling around the curves, to please slow down, and be more careful. I know the streets are for vehicles, and the speed limit on cheshire is 25 mph, but the smaller residential streets dictate slower speeds, as well as caution and good judgement. You can teach your children respect, and courtesy, until you are blue in the face, and hope that it is sinking in. But... they are still unpredictable, and usually do not use very good judgement! And (sometimes painfully so) this is a part of the learning process. Our job as adults and parents is to extend the same respect and courtesy we expect, after all, children learn by example.
