Half of all Memphis City School students fail to complete high school, reading and writing are deteriorating in general, and many young adults cannot locate Europe on a map. Our children are lured away from learning in many ways. Poverty, illiteracy, unemployment, underemployment, crime and deteriorating neighborhoods are just a few of the consequences. Libraries are part of the answer to this problem. Adults must demonstrate their continuing interest in and commitment to reading and learning, and children must be given every opportunity to expand their minds.
Please visit, call, write, or e-mail members of the city council and ask them to stop the closings.
Write porkyfromtheburrow@yahoo.com to get (1) a list of city council members with contact information, (2) a copy of my letter to a council member, (3) a petition for adults, (4) a petition for children, (5) a short notice for use with a petition posted on a bulletin board, and/or (6) a copy of the city's $600,000 study regarding the branch closings.
