2008 Newsletter #2

A long time ago when we were a rural society, we could park our vehicles wherever we pleased on our own land. We could also dump trash anywhere on our own land. We did not even have to mow or tidy up our land if we so chose. Today we are an urban
society, and as a result standards have been established by the governing body of Overland Park for proper maintenance of our property.

Some of the most common concerns in our Homes Association relating to property maintenance will be mentioned here and suggestions offered on how to comply with the City of Overland Park Ordinances. Since the first week in April, trash pick up has been on Fridays. Many of us like to do our yard work over the weekend. Where does one properly store the barrels, bags, bundles, construction waste from the honey-do list, and assorted trash that has been gathered over the weekend? It all must be stored out of sight of your neighbors. Ideally that would mean in the garage or storage shed. Sometimes that is not possible. The next best location would be behind the house out of sight from the street. It should NOT be left in front of the garage or at the side of the house unless there is a natural or man-made cover making it difficult to see from the street.

No cars, trucks, SUVs, vans, boats, wave runners, trailers, RVs, or pop-up campers should be parked on the grass in front of the house. Car, trucks, vans, and SUVs should either be parked on the driveway or on the street. Other vehicles may NOT be on the driveway but may be parked in the garage or beside the house as long as the front of the vehicle is behind the front line of the house

No vehicle should be left unattended on jacks, blocks, jack stands, or any other device used to hold them off the ground. This is a danger to children and pets. Put the tires back on if they have been removed and lower the vehicle.

Trash barrels, bags, bundles, construction debris, yard waste, or anything else that is trash to be picked up for disposal should NOT be put out more that 24 hours prior to be being picked up. This also applies to items for recycle. The barrels and recycle containers should be returned from the street or in front of the house to a proper storage location either inside the garage, in a shed, or behind the house.

The temperature is getting warmer so now is the time to get out and remove the sticks and limbs from last winter. It is also time to remove or mulch the leaves from last fall or winter.

We are all busy and no one wants to handle the bags, barrels, bundles, debris, or other trash more than once, but that is part of being an urban society.
