Upper Mississippi Gains American Heritage Rivers Designation

On July 28, 1998, the Upper Mississippi River was designated an American Heritage River by Vice President Al Gore. The designation includes 57 communities from Bemidji to St. Louis, including 19 in our metro area.
The designation will bring focused attention on the Upper Mississippi, help coordinate federal river programs and provide a "river navigator" to work with communities in the designated area. As more details become available, we will pass them along.
