One in five Americans is a bird watcher and Arizona is one of the very best birding states in the United States. Bird watching is the fastest growing hobby today. There are about 600 different bird species that make their home in the United States. This does not include the migratory travelers that pass through each spring and fall.
My wife and I started bird watching 10 years ago and have enjoyed every minute of it. It has taken us to 25 states (from Maine to California) and Canada. We have taken over 145 trips and have sighted 450 species. This is a minor accomplishment when compared to REAL avid birders. Since building our cabin here in Mogollon Estates, two and a half years ago, we have seen over 70 species on our lot. Here are just a few of some of the species you can see in this area.
Woodpeckers ?– Downy, Hairy, Lewis; Jays ?– Mexican, Pinyon, Scrub, Steller?’s; Warblers ?– Black-throated Gray, Grace?’s, Hermit, Townsend?’s, Virginia?’s, Yellow-rumped. There are many more but the list is too long for this article. We don?’t profess to be experts but if you have a bird you want identified just give us a call and we will do our best to identify it for you. You can reach us at 928-535-9532.
There are 8 Audubon Chapters in Arizona and we have one right here in the White Mountains. If you are interested, the White Mountain Audubon Society meets at 7 p.m. the first Wednesday of every month, except January and February, at the Pinetop/Lakeside Chamber of Commerce. I am the secretary and my wife is on the Membership Committee.
