Growing Gardens is a non-profit organization whose mission is to create vegetable gardens for fresh food, education, jobs, beauty, and friendship. Their focus is on providing gardens and gardening education for families, seniors, and people with disabilities. Lucky participants in the program are provided with great soil to start the garden; seeds and live plants; help from experienced gardeners; and workshops on successful gardening techniques and food preservation.
This year Growing Gardens has the capacity to build a total of 40 gardens throughout North, Northeast, and Southeast Portland, but interest in the program is so great that applications are no longer being accepted for this growing season. However, now is the time to get on the list for a spring or summer garden in 2001.
If you would like an application to become a garden recipient or information about volunteer opportunities, please call Growing Gardens at 284-8420 and ask for Heather or Hannah.
