On April 1, neighbors, volunteers, non-profits and local businesses improved livability in the Montavilla Neighborhood and increased our "urban forest" by over 80 trees! Residents had trees planted in their parking strips by qualified arborists from the non-profit organization Friends of Trees.
Perhaps the best part of the event was seeing our community come together. Over 50 volunteers donated their time on a Saturday morning to help plant the trees, including most of the people who signed up to receive trees. Montavilla Neighborhood Association supplied volunteers and funds;
Montavilla Baptist Church donated the use of their building and parking lot; Flying Pie Pizzeria fed the hungry volunteers; and the Safeway at Burnside & 82nd donated pastries to keep everyone going. Thanks for being
such great neighbors! When we see those trees in the future, we will have more than shade in the summer and bright colors in the fall, we will have the friendships forged by our community efforts.
There will be another opportunity for getting trees next spring, so stay tuned for volunteer opportunities to help make the 2001 tree planting as successful as this years! We?’re going to need everyone?’s help because our biggest organizer, Clint Wertz, recently moved to The Dalles.
