Montavilla Neighborhood Association

October 2001 Meeting Minutes

What's going on!

The Montavilla Neighborhood Association held their October general meeting at the Montavilla Community Center. Since October was Crime Prevention month, that’s what the focus of the agenda was and several people were present including Commander Grubbs from the SE Precinct; Amy Cammack, Alcohol Licensing; Hugh McDowell, Graffiti Specialist; Teresa Leeper, Block Home Director; Marsha Dennis, Crime Prevention Specialist; Police Officers Gary Manugean and Teresa Utke; and District Attorney Dan Reynolds.

Each one of these people offered information about their specific area of expertise and supplied everyone with literature about some solutions to crime.

Bob and Cindi Benson are continuing to fund-raise for the bullet proof vests for dogs in the Canine Unit of the SE Precinct. If you have any ideas or would like to make a contribution, call 503/220-6207 or email maggib123@netscape.net

Club Rio at 82nd and Hawthorne continues to be a topic of conversation as neighbors are still frustrated by some of the activity that is going on around their homes. The owners are trying to keep the Good Neighbor Agreement but find it hard to patrol everywhere at once.

Nike Day has been cancelled because of lack of support from Volunteers of America and instead we will be teaming up with the Multnomah Bible College students next year to do yard work on our own for senior and/or disabled residents.

There will be a Bulky Waste pickup in Montavilla this coming February. The neighborhood will be sectioned into two and half will be done on Feb. 9 and the other on Feb 23. Metro will mail out letters to all households regarding this after the first of the year. If you’d like to volunteer to help with this project, please contact Kimberly McClain at 503/262-0831.

Volunteers are still needed to help with the maintenance party at the Berrydale Community Garden. This will be hosted by Hands on Portland on Saturday, November 3rd from 9 am to 12 pm. The garden is located next to Clark Elementary School at approximately 92nd and Hawthorne. Contact Andrew Bodien at 503/281-7469 or andrew@bodien.org to sign up.

Kevin Kays is the new Land Use and Transportation Chair for Montavilla and Sandy McDaniel is the new Banner Committee Chair.

Rebuilding Together is a nonprofit organization supported entirely by contribution of time, labor, materials and money. Every year they sponsor “Christmas in April”, a program that is dedicated to repairing the homes of those who, due to financial hardship, age, and/or disability, cannot do the work themselves. This year their goals is to repair and rehabilitate 60+ homes on April 27, 2002. If you know someone, a neighbor maybe or a friend in Montavilla, who could use this wonderful service, please contact Kimberly McClain at 503/262-0831 by November 30, 2001.
