For all of you who couldn't make it to the meeting on Monday, here's
a brief update on what happened.
Announcements were made including the Association sponsoring a Cake
Walk game at the Taylor Ct Block Party. There was also discussion
about having a float in the parade. If you are interested in helping
at the block party, contact Errol Carlson at 503/253-5113.
A reminder about the hazardous waste clean up at Montavilla Baptist
Church on June 7, 8, & 9 was also announced. For more information,
contact the church.
The Kiwanis Club pancake breakfast will be this weekend and
volunteers are needed. It will be at the Cascade College on Burnside
(follow the signs in the parking lot). To volunteer to help, contact
Diane Dickson at 503/254-5595.
The liquor license for the Asian restaurant (I've forgotten the name)
on the North side of Glisan and NE 79th has been shelved because the
establishment has changed owners and the new owners haven't yet
applied for one.
Our neighborhood officer, Leslie Pintarich, informed us that car
prowls are on the rise in the neighborhood. She advised us to take
steps to reduce the risk including parking in a garage or under a
street light if possible, use a club on the driver's wheel, and don't
leave anything in the car.
Reports were given regarding SE Uplift. The Request For Proposal
from Commissioner Saltzman's office was put on hold until next year.
This proposal requires the coalition offices that provide support to
the neighborhood associations to "bid" for that job.
The Outreach Committee is planning to attend a couple of upcoming
events and "spread the word" about the association. We will be at
the hazardous waste clean up in June (see above), the Mt Tabor Music
in the Park event in July and at the Taylor Ct Block Party. If you
would like to help with any of these events or in any other way,
contact Kimberly McClain at 503/262-0831 or kmbrly101@hotmail.com
The Crime Prevention Committee is working on the Montavilla United
Methodist Church issue along with the Club Rio. They will be meeting
with Club Rio to draw up a Good Neighbor Agreement (GNA). The final
draft should be ready in June. If you have any questions about this,
contact Rhetta Drennan at 503/232-0010.
All of the committees are in need of volunteers. If you are
interested in helping out in any way, contact Kimberly McClain at
503/262-0831 or kmbrly101@hotmail.com
The cell tower issue looks like it will be heading to LUBA. Alice
Wallen, who is leading the fight against the Voice Stream tower, has
been working diligently to win this case. She could use legal
support. If you can help, call her at 503/771-7800.
Elections took place and a few new people stepped forward to
volunteer their time to the board. The new association officers are:
President -Kimberly McClain
Vice President -Lisa Laurenceau
Secretary -Nancy Tannler
Treasurer -Frank Wildensee
Land Use & Transportation Chair -Sandra McDaniel
SE Delegate -Lisa Laurenceau
Parks and Recreation Chair -David Walker
The By-laws were reviewed and discussed. There will be a formal
discussion and vote at the June 11 meeting. (I will send them out on
this list serv so that you have a chance to read them and make any
suggestions you think necessary. You can email your changes to me at
kmbrly101@hotmail.com or bring them to the June meeting).
New business included a discussion about the National Night Out event
on the first Tuesday in August (August 7). This is the national
crime prevention night where neighbors turn on their porch lights and
go out and meet their neighbors. The decision is whether to have a
large party for all residents or a bunch of small block parties
organized by the association and residents. If you have any ideas
about this, please let me know at kmbrly101@hotmail.com.
Also discussed was the possibility of having a Movie Night at
Safeway. We would rope off the north side of Safeway at 82nd and
Burnside and show a family-friendly film some Saturday evening during
the summer. Safeway is on board with this, we are just looking for
someone who would like to organize it. Some of the leg work has
already been done so that person would just take over from there.
For more info, contact Joanna Wilson at 503/253-3845.
We voted to give $100 to the Taylor Ct Block Party organizers for the
event. We also voted to give $100 to the fund for the Portland
Police SE Precient Officer Appreciation day in June. This is a 12
hour "feast" for the officers at the precient to show the neighbors'
appreciation for the job that they do. If you'd like to volunteer to
help out or bring food, contact Joanna Wilson at the number above.
There was also a vote taken to give a week's rent to a homeless
couple that have come into our neighborhood. There was much
discussion about this issue (and it continues). We are putting
together a Ad Hoc committee to discuss setting aside money
for "hardship issues" and what the criteria would be for residents
receiving money from this fund (if it were to be set up). If you are
interested in this issue and want to join this discussion either by
email or in person, you can contact me at kmbrly101@hotmail.com or
503/262-0831.
We ajourned at this point after an "action-packed" meeting.
Please consider giving a little of your time to the neighborhood
association. The time is small and the reward is great! The
Association would like to thank you for expressing an interest in the
neighborhood by subscribing to this list serv. Don't forget, ANYONE
CAN POST TO THE LIST SERV!!!
