E/SE Community Court Project

Goal of Community Court

Community Court is based on the concept of "Restorative Justice". By bringing the defendant before the community that he/she violated, the defendant must be accountable. This is done through completing community service projects that help restore the community itself and through social services that serve to restore the defendant as a healthy member of the community.

In the Beginning

It started as a plea court on February 17, 2000 at the Brentwood-Darlington Community Center. The court will become an arraignment court in May 2000.

Court sessions are every first and third Thursday of the month at 1 pm.

The average docket is 45-60 cases a day.

Four crimes make up the majority of the cases heard: Theft/Shoplifting, Prostitution Free Zone Trespass, Prostitution, and alcohol-related offenses. Other eligible offenses include, but are not limited to, Forgery, Noise offenses, Unlawful Entry to a Motor Vehicle, OPDR cases, Disorderly Conduct, Graffiti, and misdemeanor Drug and Gambling offenses.

Eligible Defendants

Adults charged with committing a violation or misdemeanor in the East or Southeast police precincts of the Portland Police Bureau.
