1. 2001-2 winter was very mild. We still have some dead trees and quite a bit of deer damage. Wrapping and tree protectors seem to help control the deer menace.
2. We received $1500.00 matching grant money from the DNR and State Forestry Service and planted 24 Crab Apple trees to extend our collection to 33 trees.
3. We received money from the Gil Tavener memorial fund, from Muscatine Garden Club and from Varied Industries to hire John Porter to complete the bridge/boardwalk across the wetland. This makes a delightful walk to the Crab Apple Orchard.
4. Brian Walter installed the Kiosk. Mr. Porter, with assistance from Arboretum members and Catholic Youth, installed a patio area around the kiosk. We have a bench to add to this area in 2003.
5. Youth Conservation Corps members helped with clean up and mulching and children from the Adventist Christian School wrapped trees in the fall and will unwrap them this spring.
6. Catholic Youth also worked two days mulching and cleaning around trees.
7. Scouts from Troop 133 spread gravel on the path that led to the bridge/boardwalk and mulched and cleaned around trees.
8. Federated Garden Clubs of Iowa donated two Red Oak trees to be planted as memorials to the 9-11 World Trade Center disaster. Garden Club state president Fran Steuck and Mayor pro tem Jerry Lange conducted a dedication service.
9. Muscatine Youth Corps worked several hours in the Arboretum weeding around the flag pole and gazebo. They also put tree protectors on trees planted in 2002.
